Modal Verbs 2

Lesson Context

This is the children's second lesson on modal verbs and no new vocabulary will be introduced. Instead, the children will practise all of the verbs in the previous lesson with new activities such as 'match up', 'smoke signals' and a reading comprehension. Familiar activities such as 'secret signal' and 'hangman' will also be played to consolidate these verbs in preparation for the writing lesson next week

Slide 2 - Main Introduction

Slide 3 - Starter activity - Das Kartenspiel - revision of  'sport and hobbies' vocabulary 

Explain that the children should be using the 'Lob' words on slide 3 and let them get on with it. Reward children for using the 'Lob' words. Lots of the verbs from these lessons may prove useful today

 

Slides 4, 5 and 6 - dürfen, mögen and sollen

Sag mir nach the different conjugations of these verbs. Revise these quickly as you played 'Secret Signal' with these last week in 'Modal Verbs 1' 

 

Slides 7 - 10 - Secret Signal with können, müssen and wollen

You played secret signal with dürfen, mögen and sollen last week so play it this week with these 3 modal verbs. Sag mir nach the verbs and play secret signal after each one. Using slide 8 (können) as an example, sag mir nach the vocabulary on the slide and then ask one child to leave the room. Agree with the rest of the class on a secret signal, such as touching your nose. Choose a child to perform this signal at any given moment. Bring the first child back into the room and ask the class to say 'ich kann' (the first item on the list) in a chant. Every time the class sees the designated person do the agreed secret signal, they move onto the next phrase in the list - du darfst. The child has to guess who is doing the signal before the class gets to the bottom of the list. If the child who went outside guesses correctly, they earn a reward. If the class get to the bottom, the 'signaller' and somebody else from the class, earn a reward.

 

Repeat for müssen and wollen on slides 9 and 10

 

Slides 11 and 12 - Verbs learnt so far

As you did last week, sag mir nach the verbs on these slides. Explain that all of these verbs are in the infinitive form which means in its basic form. It is the version of the verb which will appear in the dictionary. The infinitive form of a verb in English is usually preceded by to (e.g., to play, to dance, to sing). 

 

On slide 11 give a few examples of translations, combining modal verbs with these verbs, e.g.:

I want to play - Ich will spielen

They like to read - Sie mögen lesen

He can speak English - Er kann Englisch sprechen (point out that the basic verb comes at the end)

 

Give more examples on slide 12, e.g.:

I am allowed to eat that - Ich darf das essen (point out that the basic verb comes at the end)

We have to run - Wir müssen rennen

It is supposed to rain - Es soll regnen

 

Ask some similar translation questions using modal verbs and the verbs on slides 11 and 12 and reward children who can translate into German.

 

Finally as it is not on the slides, ask if anyone can guess what 'to live' is. Give a clue such as 'Ich wohne in Birmingham'

 

Slide 13 - Match up

Demonstrating with the examples on the slide, the children have to match up the German sentences with the equivalent English sentences on the back of their sheets, drawing a line connecting them to match them up. You might also want to do number 1 with the children - 'Ich darf turnen'. 'Ich darf' means 'I am allowed to' or 'I may' and 'turnen' means to do gymnastics, so they are looking for 'I am allowed to do gymnastics' - number 6. If they are stuck, all of the vocabulary they need is on the front of their sheets. Give the children up to 10 minutes to match up all 12 sentences.     

 

Slide 14 - Smoke Signals

Two pairs of children stand at opposite diagonal ends of the classroom. Give 1 pair a sentence to write down on a board and then act out for the other pair to guess. The guessing pair must write down the sentence in German on their board. The sentence should contain a modal verb and another infinitive verb, just as sentences have been so far this lesson. All other children should also write down a guess. If the guessing pair is correct, then all 4 children win a reward and stay where they are. If they are not, then randomly select someone from the class to guess. Keep going until you get a correct answer. The correct guesser can then choose 3 friends to play smoke signals with, one as a partner as the other 2 as a pair at the opposite end of the classroom.

 

Slide 15 - Reading Comprehension

Go over the text with the children and give them a few minutes to see how much of it they can translate. The text is on the back of the children's sheets so they can write notes/translations on that if they wish. Randomly select and reward children to translate different parts of the text

 

Slide 16 - Comprehension Questions

The German questions are on the left when you open this slide. You may want to go over the questions words or write them on the board e.g. wie - how, was - what, wo - where. Give children around 5 minutes to answer the 5 questions. All of the vocabulary they need is on their sheets.

*Number 3 - there are a few possible answers. Some children will simply write 'nein' (which is correct)

 

After the 5 minutes, go over the answers. The answers will reveal one by one when you click on the slide

 

Slide 17 - Hangman/Plenary

Model task first and then let some children come to the front with their own sentences. I found these rules work well for the classroom:

* The sentence has to contain a modal verb and the infinitive of another verb e.g. Sie will die Schokolade essen

* The class are only allowed to guess 5 letters and then they must start guessing the sentence

* Whoever gets the sentence can come to the front with their own sentence
