Lesson Context

This lesson can carry directly on from Birthday 2 but it is designed and ideal for the first lesson of a new school year. The lesson will allow the children to recall and expand the children's ability to have a conversation in German. The children will be able to use German vocabulary learnt from the 'Five Questions' part of Zeit für Deutsch. The children will learn a language learning strategy using a 'cover and reveal' method and they will play some fun games such as 'match up' and 'build a pile'. The children will finish the lesson by watching a video of Felix and Franzi, where they will have to answer questions relating to a 'German only' video. I have introduced a new 'blue' success criteria where I will end the lesson specifically testing the children on this, having told the children in the introduction what the blue success criteria is.

Main Introduction

Slide 2

Communicate LO and SC

Highlight the 'blue' Success Criteria - 'I can say 3 things in German that I can use on the phone'. Explain that at the end of the lesson you will randomly select (and reward) children who are able to do this.

Slide 3 - Starter activity - Das Kartenspiel - revision of Introduction vocabulary and Colours

Explain that the children should be using the 'Lob' words on slide 3 and let them get on with it. As this may be first lesson after the holidays, use the 'easier' Introduction and Colours flashcards. Some of the conversational 'introduction' vocabulary will be useful in today's lesson.

Slide 4 - Phone conversation transcript

Choose 1 child to have a German telephone conversation with, using the transcript on the IWB. Give the chosen child a toy phone and use one yourself to add to the feel of this being a phone conversation, not just a regular conversation. Play the role of '1' with the child and then switch to the role of '2', saying your names where the blank lines are. Repeat with a different child.

Now throw in some of the 'red' questions into the conversation and see if the volunteer can answer them using the red answers next to the questions to help them. Point this out if they are struggling. Now get the volunteer to ask some red questions. You should be building up to as long a conversation as you can. Now point out that you can replace 'wunderbar' with any of the green 'praise' vocabulary on the slide. They should have already been using this today in the Flashcard Game. Finally mention that while 'auf wiedersehen' can be translated as 'see you again', on the phone you can say 'auf wiederhören', which can be translated as 'hear you again'.

Slide 5 - Secret Signal (with a twist)

To mirror a phone conversation, the boys say the red vocabulary and the girls say the green

Using the vocabulary on the slide, ask one child to leave the room and agree with the rest of the class on a secret signal, such as touching your nose. Choose a child to perform this signal at any given moment. Bring the first child back into the room and ask the class to say 'Hallo, hier ist Martin (the first item on the list) in a chant. Every time the class sees the designated person do the agreed secret signal, they move onto the next phrase in the list - 'Guten Tag, hier ist Sabine?' The child has to guess who is doing the signal before the class gets to the bottom of the list. If the child who went outside guesses correctly, they earn a reward. If the class get to the bottom, the 'signaller' and somebody else from the class, earn a reward

Slide 6 (same as slide 4) - Phone conversation transcript

Give the children 5 minutes to have a telephone conversation with their partners. Tell them that after the 5 minutes, you will randomly choose some pairs and if they can have a telephone conversation in German, they will earn a reward. If the pair manage to use some 'red' vocabulary, the reward will be even better (such as a triple sticker).

Slide 7 - Vocabulary for clip and language learning strategy

Tell the children that der Frosch and die Ente have 'become famous' and made a video about talking on the phone. In order to fully understand the video, the children will need to know the vocabulary on this slide. Sag mir nach the vocabulary on the slide and this may be an opportunity to teach the children a vocabulary learning strategy:

Work alone to start with. Read through the vocabulary. Now cover up the English (black) vocabulary and try to translate 'das Handy' into English. Say what you think it is and then reveal the answer. Do the same for the next line - 'das Telefon' and keep going until you get to the bottom. If you had any wrong, repeat the whole process until you get them all correct. Now repeat the process but this time leave the English and cover up the German. This side is more difficult. Once you think you know all of the vocabulary, get a partner to test you by turning over your sheet and giving you a word in English. You have to translate it into German. Give the children 5 minutes on their tables to learn this vocabulary and practise this strategy.

Slide 8 - Match up

To test the effectiveness of the language learning strategy in slide 7, each pair of children has a pack of the 'slide 7' vocabulary cards. The pair has to match up the German words in their bag to the corresponding English word. When they are finished they put up their hands. When each pair puts up their hands check their answer and tell them 'richtig' or 'falsch'.

Extension - if some children finish very quickly you can send them to slower pairs to help them.

Slide 9 - Build a Pile and Questions

Explain that the children will watch the clip next but they need to think of 2 things while watching the clip:

A) Build a pile - Everytime the children hear the word 'wir' (we), they build another block onto their pile

B) See if they can find the answers to the following questions:

1) What number does Felix dial?

2) Where do Felix and Franzi live?

3) What was in the parcel?

4) How is the crocodile?

They can write the answers on their sheets

Plenary/Slide 10 - Felix and Franzi Clip - Ein Neues Telefon

Click on link and start the clip. The first time, stop at every piece of new vocabulary and test/reward children who can translate and say what is happening. At 1:18 Felix dials a number. Ask the children what number he dials. Play that part of the clip again and then randomly select children to say what number he dials. Reward the first child who gives the correct number - 8816386143. Now let the children watch the rest of the clip.

Let the clip run through the second time and afterwards ask the 3 questions, rewarding correct answers accordingly.

Assessment and Evidence

Observe and ask questions

Refer back to the success criteria after the 3 questions about the Felix and Franzi clip.

Check achievement of the success criteria by highlighting the 'blue' SC and questioning and rewarding randomly selected children (using lollipop sticks)
