Zeit für Deutsch U

Session Context

This session covers the activities from Zeit für Deutsch S and T, together with new 'Transport and Directions' activities, starting at slide 38. Slides 2-4 look at U cognates but after that the session is the same as Zeit für Deutsch T up until slide 38, when the 'Transport and Directions' activities begin.

I have put the new material at the end for ease of reference but feel free to mix up the slides with ones from earlier Zeit für Deutsch sessions and leave some out, as different activities work better for different teachers and classes.

Slides 2 - 4 - Cognates

Say 'ist es Zeit für die U-Bahn?' The children shout back 'nein'

Say 'ist es Zeit für die Uniform?' The children shout back 'nein'

Say 'ist es Zeit für die Universität?' The children shout back 'nein'

Slide 5 - Zeit für Deutsch Song

Say 'ist es Zeit für Deutsch?' The children shout back 'Ja'

The children then sing the Zeit für Deutsch song

Note - I have made up the following:

To the tune of 'Gangnam Syle the children sing 'Hey, Zeit für Deutsch, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, es ist Zeit für Deutsch'

Please feel free to make up your own song. I find the 'Gangnam Style' song works really well as the children can also do the Gangnam Style actions.

Sport

Slide 6 - Sportarten Song

Teach the children this song/rap, encouraging them to clap on the underlined words. This will be the song to introduce 'sport' activities in the future

Slide 7 - Treibst du Sport?

Go over this vocabulary. Choose some random children and ask them 'treibst du Sport?' They should answer with one of the sentences on the board. Explain that if the children want to be really clever, they can include the word 'gern' in their answer, which means 'like'. This goes after the verb. Give a few examples:

Ich spiele gern Fussball - I like to play football

Ich spiele gern Hockey - I like to play hockey

Ich schwimme gern - I like to swim

On their tables, get the children to spend a few minutes asking the other children 'treibst du Sport?' The children can make up answers even if they don't like the sport and they can give different answers to different children

Slide 8 - When? - Days of the Week

Sag mir nach the vocabulary on this slide, which should be familiar to the children. Ask some translation questions such as:

On Monday I play football

On Tuesday I swim

Encourage the children to put the verb in second place

Am Montag spiele ich Fussball

Am Dienstag schwimme ich

Slide 9 - When? - Time of Day

Sag mir nach the vocabulary on this slide. Point out that when you combine the day with time of day, it is one word in German e.g. Am Montagmorgen, Am Dienstagnachmittag etc ...

Again, ask the children some translation questions, encouraging them to put the verb in the second position, such as:

Evenings I play rugby - Abends spiele ich Rugby

On Thursday morning I do gymnastics - Am Donnerstagmorgen turne ich

Slide 10 - Translation 1 - German to English

On their tables, get the children to go through the slide with a partner and translate each sentence into English. After a few minutes, randomly select a child for each sentence and reward them if they are able to translate correctly

Slide 11 - Translation 2 - English to German

Give the children a few more minutes to complete this and then reward those who are able to translate correctly

Slide 12 - Secret Signal

Using the vocabulary on the slide, ask one child to leave the room and agree with the rest of the class on a secret signal, such as touching your nose. Choose a child to perform this signal at any given moment. Bring the first child back into the room and ask the class to say 'ich spiele' (the first item on the list) in a chant. Every time the class sees the designated person do the agreed secret signal, they move onto the next phrase in the list - du spielst. The child has to guess who is doing the signal before the class gets to the bottom of the list. If the child who went outside guesses correctly, they earn a reward. If the class get to the bottom, the 'signaller' and somebody else from the class, earn a reward

Slides 13, 14 and 15 - Conjugations of schwimmen, rennen and turnen

Just as you did with 'to play' on slide 12, tell the children they will also need all of the other conjugations of 'schwimmen', 'rennen' and 'turnen'

Sag mir nach the vocabulary on the slides and ask questions such as how would you say:

*He swims

*They run

*We do gymnastics

Point out the patterns in the endings and compare with 'spielen' and 'haben'. You could play secret signal with these slides too

Slide 16 - Hangman

The sentences have to begin with a day/time of day/both and end with sport e.g. Am Sonntag turne ich

Model task first and then let some children come to the front with their own sentences. I found these rules work well for the classroom:

* The class are only allowed to guess 5 letters and then they must start guessing the sentence

* Whoever gets the sentence can come to the front with their own sentence

Hobbies

Slide 17 - Questions 'Hide and Reveal'

When you go onto this slide, only the German will appear. Go through the questions with the children and ask them to see if the can translate them. After the children have had a go, reveal the correct translations, one by one

Slides 18 - 37 - Wer wird Millionär?

'Zusammen' activity. Children to work with a partner using a wipe board and pen but today we will using the 'who wants a be a millionaire' style slides.

  • Say the English and bring up the four possible German answers
  • The children work together quietly to write the correct letter on their wipe boards - A, B, C or D
  • After the time limit the children reveal their answers simultaneously
  • Repeat for the next question

*Extension - Get the children to write the German before any of the options appear.

*Note - The children will need to be familiar with 'Hobbies 1' in order to answer questions 4 and 5

Town and Directions

Slide 38 - the wheels on the bus - die Räder vom Bus

Sing the song with the children to the tune of the English song, performing actions such as the wheels going round and beeping a horn.

Slides 39 - Directions (use 'das Hotel' in the examples)

Go through the vocabulary with the children. Above the first blue line is for the person asking for directions. Point out that 'es gibt' means there is/are and 'gibt es' means is/are there. This is a really useful phrase to know. Between the blue lines is the vocabulary that the person giving directions will need. You may also want to point out that stop is 'halt'. Point out the use of the word schön (beautiful) under the second blue line

Choose a child to practise having a German conversation with. You ask for directions to the hotel and the child has to give directions. You could follow the directions and walk to the Hotel which should be up on the wall or just remain where you are and listen to the directions. You will find the sheets for the wall in lesson 'Town and Directions 1'

Working with a partner, give the children 2 minutes to ask for and give directions to the hotel on the wall. The pairs should remain in their chairs

Slides 40 - 54 - Useful places in town

Go through this vocabulary with the children. You may want to point out the following:

*Letterbox is the same word as post box (Briefkasten)

*Krankenhaus - Krank means 'sick' and haus means 'house' - Also wagen is a word for 'car' (Volkswagen) so Krankenwagen would mean 'ambulance'

*Flughafen - Flug means 'flight' and Hafen means 'port'

As they did with 'das Hotel', now give the children 5 minutes to ask for and give directions to the places on the wall. The pairs should remain in their chairs

Slide 55 - Treasure Hunt Challenge

Child 1 - leaves the classroom

Child 2 - Writes down one of the places on the wall on the back of a wipe board without showing anybody

Child 1 comes in and child 2 has to direct child 1 to the correct place using only German. They have 1 minute to do this. Once child 2 stops or the time is up, child 1 reveals the place on the back of their board. If child 2 is standing next to this place, then both children earn a reward. Repeat several times with different children

Slide 56 - Blindfolded Treasure Hunt Challenge

As slide 55, but this time child 1 is blindfolded

Slide 57 - Translation

Bring up all of the English vocabulary on this slide. Give the children a few minutes to write the German translations on their wipe boards. After the time is up, randomly select 1 child per answer, reveal the answer and reward the child accordingly (the answers come up one at a time)

The King or Queen of Knowledge Song and Plenary / Translation is now on Slide 58 as it comes at the end of 'Zeit für Deutsch'
