Lesson Context

This is the children's first lesson specifically on modal verbs, although they have touched on können, müssen and wollen in the previous 'German Dictionary' lessons. The children will also revisit all (22) of the verbs they have learnt/touched on  in Zeit für Deutsch and will try to combine these with the 6 conjugated modal verbs. Dürfen, mögen and sollen will be introduced and the children will play secret signal and a translation activity to practise conjugating the modal verbs. The lesson will end with the fun activities 'what did they say' and 'verb charades'

Resources

Powerpoint presentation

'Sport and Hobbies' flashcards for the starter activity

Hand outs which the children can take home for revision

Slide 2 - Main Introduction

Communicate LO and SC

Slide 3 - Starter activity - Das Kartenspiel - revision of  'sport and hobbies' vocabulary

Explain that the children should be using the 'Lob' words on slide 3 and let them get on with it. Reward children for using the 'Lob' words. Lots of the verbs from these lessons may prove useful today

Slide 4 - What is a Modal Verb?

Go over the slide which explains what a modal verb is. It might be easier to describe them as helping verbs and there are usually used in sentences with other verbs

Slides 5, 6 and 7 - können, müssen and wollen

Sag mir nach the different conjugations of these verbs. Revise these quickly as you already used these last lesson in 'German Dictionary 3'.

Slides 8 - 11 - Introduction of dürfen, mögen and sollen and Secret Signal

Introduce these new modal verbs and play secret signal after each one. Using slide 9 (dürfen) as an example, sag mir nach the vocabulary on the slide and then ask one child to leave the room. Agree with the rest of the class on a secret signal, such as touching your nose. Choose a child to perform this signal at any given moment. Bring the first child back into the room and ask the class to say 'ich darf' (the first item on the list) in a chant. Every time the class sees the designated person do the agreed secret signal, they move onto the next phrase in the list - du darfst. The child has to guess who is doing the signal before the class gets to the bottom of the list. If the child who went outside guesses correctly, they earn a reward. If the class get to the bottom, the 'signaller' and somebody else from the class, earn a reward.

Repeat for mögen and sollen on slides 10 and 11

Slides 12 and 13 - Verbs learnt so far

Sag mir nach the verbs on these slides. Explain that all of these verbs are in the infinitive form which means in its basic form. It is the version of the verb which will appear in the dictionary. The infinitive form of a verb in English is usually preceded by to (e.g., to play, to dance, to sing). You might want to flit back to screens 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11 to show that even though you conjugated the modal verbs, they have an infinitive at the top of the screen. This is the same with the verbs in Zeit für Deutsch so far. You can conjuage them but as we will be conjugating the modal verbs, these verbs will stay in their basic (infinitive) form.

Go back to slide 12 and give a few examples of translations, combining modal verbs with these verbs, e.g.:

I want to play - Ich will spielen

They like to read - Sie mögen lesen

He can speak English - Er kann Englisch sprechen (point out that the basic verb comes at the end)

Give more examples on slide 13, e.g.:

I am allowed to eat that - Ich darf das essen (point out that the basic verb comes at the end)

We have to run - Wir müssen rennen

It is supposed to rain - Es soll regnen

Ask some similar translation questions using modal verbs and the verbs on slides 12 and 13 and reward children who can translate into German.

Slide 14 - Translation

At first only the English side will display on this slide. Give the children up to 7 minutes to translate the English into German. They can write their translations down on the back of their hand outs. To help the children, the basic verbs and conjugations of all the modal verbs are also on the back of their hand outs.

After 7 minutes randomly select children to translate. Each answer will be revealed when you click on the slide.

Slide 15 - What did they say?

Give the children a couple of minutes to make up their own sentences, including a conjugated modal verb and another basic verb. They can write one or two underneath the blue line on the back of their hand outs. Then randomly select one child who has to read out and translate their own sentence. If this is done correctly then they can come to the front (and wear the crown). Now select another child who reads out their sentence in German. The king/queen has to translate into English. If the king/queen translates 3 separate sentences then they win a reward. If they can't translate then the person who read out their sentence comes to the front.

Slide 16 - Verb Charades/Plenary

A volunteer comes up and acts out one of their sentences. E.g. if they have written 'Ich kann schwimmen' - they could point at themselves, give themselves a thumbs up then pretend to swim. You may want to act out a few examples yourself first. The class members have to say what the sentence is in German and whoever says the correct German sentence gets to come up to the front.

Note - Get the actor to tell you what the sentence is before they perform it

Assessment and Evidence

Observe and ask questions

Refer back to the learning objective and success criteria after the charades activity. Ask some more children to read out and translate their sentences

Check achievement of the success criteria when you are on slide 17 by questioning and rewarding randomly selected children (using lollipop sticks)
