Lesson Context

In the previous lesson, the children combined their knowledge of 'sein' with their age, colours and countries vocabulary. This lesson expands on that by using 'sein' in the context of animals and houses, all the while strengthening the children's ability to use 'sein' naturally and in a variety of situations.  This is again done through translation but also fun activities such as 'Room Walk', 'House Charades' and 'Pick a Card and Mime' are included

Slide 2

Communicate LO and SC

Highlight the 'blue SC' and tell the children that prizes will go to children who can use 'to be' when talking about animals, which will be evident in the pick a card and miming game at the end of the lesson

 

*You may want the children to practise 'house' vocabulary at this point which will be useful this lesson. If you wish to do this, I have included the flashcards at the bottom of the page. The set also includes continents and countries which will be useful revision of last weeks lesson

 

Slide 3 - 4 - to be (sein)

As you did last week, sag mir nach the vocabulary on slide 3. Go to slide 4 and ask the children if they can tell the difference between slides 3 and 4.

 

On slide 4 explain the 3 uses of 'you are'

Du bist - You are - speaking to someone informally, such as a friend

Sie sind - You are - speaking to someone formally, such as an older person or someone you don't know

Ihr seid, - You are - informal like 'du bist', but speaking to 2 or more people

 

As this website is aimed at helping Primary School Children communicate in German, explain that it is fine for them to use 'du bist' for any situation when they want to say 'you are'. You are just making them aware that there are different forms. This goes for every verb e.g. du hast, Sie haben, Ihr habt etc... If they wish to use the correct form (e.g. when addressing the teacher), they still can

 

Slides 5 - 10 - Rooms

Sag mir nach 'room' vocabulary on these slides. As you go through the slides, ask random translation questions such as:

I am in the dining room

They are in the living room

We are in the garden

 

Once you get to slide 10, ask if any of the children want to play the teacher. Like 'King/Queen of Knowledge', the child says a sentence in English (such as the 3 examples above) that they can translate into German. You then randomly select a child (using lollipop sticks) and if they can translate they 'become King/Queen' but if they can't, the current King/Queen earns a reward and they get another go. If someone has a 5 turn streak, they earn a special reward 

 

Slide 11 - House Charades

The children will compete in teams for this activity. A volunteer from each team comes up, is given a form of 'to be' and a room to act by the teacher, and then has to act out something they would do in that room. So for example - 'Wir sind im Esszimmer' - The actor could make a gesture indicating 'we' and then act out eating some food 

 

Each team is only allowed a maximum of 2 guesses so they must work together to guess. The team who guessed the correct room in the shortest amount of time wins. If the team makes 2 incorrect guesses then they are out. Say 'Badezimmer' at your own risk! 

 

Slide 12 - To be and rooms translation

This slide is on the children's hand out with space to the right so they can write the translation next to the German sentence. After 5+ minutes randomly select and reward children who can translate the given sentences.

 

Slide 13 - Room Walk

Using the 6 Rooms already placed around the classroom, randomly select 2 children to compete against each other with the winner earning a reward. Say a sentence in English using 'to be' and the name of one of the rooms on the wall. For example:

I am in the kitchen

You are in the living room

They are in the garden

 

The children race to the correct room on the wall. The first child to the correct room then has a chance of winning the prize. Say the sentence again and s/he has to translate it into German. Repeat activity several times, randomly selecting different children every time.

 

Slides 14 - 24 - 'Welches Tier bin ich' Mime

Sag mir nach the animals on the slides and also the vocabulary on slide 23. I have chosen a mix of animals from 'Animals 1' and 'Animals 2' - the ones I consider to be the most difficult.

Choose one child to come to the front and face away from the IWB, towards the class. Bring up an animal on the IWB behind the child and then select a child from the class to mime that animal. The child at the front guesses with 'bist du der ...' The miming child replies with one of the answers from slide 24. Repeat the activity several times with different children

 

Slide 25 - Pick a Card and Mime

Explain that one of the children will be selected to come to the front to act out a whole sentence, not just an animal. Tell the children to have a think about how they would mime the different 'sein' conjugations on the slide. Demonstrate a few examples and then show how you would mime a full sentence. For example - 'ich bin eine Löwe' you could point at yourself and then roar like a lion. Use the cards at the bottom of this page for this activity. Select a child to go first and then children who say the correct German sentence get a turn at the front.
