Express Preferences about Fruit

'Der Kartentausch' is a common theme in this lesson. The children will begin the lesson by playing this using the character cards from Little Linguist to describe themselves. A new word, 'anhaben', will be introduced which will enable the children to tell each other what they character is wearing but it will also subtly introduce the children to the concept of separable verbs. The children will revise what they did last week by describing the food and saying whether it is healthy and unhealthy and they will also be able to say what they like and don't like. The children will put all of this knowledge together in a new 'Kartentausch' activity, which has a twist (or two). The children will use food cards instead of character cards and there will also be an 'X' card . They will then learn a new German song about food and the lesson will end with a memory competition where children will compete against each other to see who can list the most German food.

Slide 3 - Starter activity - Der Kartentausch - Describing themselves and a character
As they did in 'Animals 2', explain to the children that they will playing 'Kartentausch' with the 'character' card on their tables.
Sing 'wie siehst du aus' on slide 3 to the 'Adams Family' tune.
*If you don't have these cards, just play the same flashcard game as last lesson in Fruit 1
Slide 4 - Wer bin ich?
Point out to the children that there is a new sentence - 'ich habe ...an' (I have ... on). Explain to the children that they should still try to make 3 sentences but they can experiment with the new sentence if they wish.
Now choose a card and model with a child. Then the children find a partner with their hand up, say 3 things about their character. Then the partner says 3 things about their character. Swap cards. Hand up. Find a new partner with their hand up and repeat.
Slide 5 - 13 - Fruit Vocabulary
Sag mir nach the German words for the food on these slides. On each slide, ask the children questions from last week such as:
Was ist das?
Ist die Schokolade gesund?
Welche Farbe hat die Birne?*
*Point out that you ask 'which colour has the fruit (pear) but you answer with 'the fruit (pear) is ...'
Slide 14 - German Tongue Twisters
Model saying the tongue twister to the children. See if any of the children can translate it into English and reward them if they can. Now 'sag mir nach' each line of the tongue twister. Model making up your own tongue twister using children from the room and food that the children know. E.g. Katie mag Kuchen, Kuchen mag Katie. Children to practise making up their own tongue twisters on their tables. If they are struggling tell them that they can use any German names and any German words they know e.g. animals, colours, clothes. After a few minutes choose some children randomly using lollipop sticks to perform their own tongue twister. Reward those children who perform 4 correct lines.
Slide 15 - Expressing preferences
Sag mir nach the vocabulary on the slide. For each one make up a sentence and ask if anyone can translate into English. Now say some sentences in English and ask if anyone can translate into German. Finally see if any children can make up their own sentences about what food they like or don't like. Let the children practise on their tables with their partner and using their hand outs to help them. After a few minutes, choose random children using lollipop sticks and if they are able to give you one correct sentence about a food they like or dislike, they get a reward.
Slide 16 - Kartentausch (Find Herr/Frau X)
As the children did at the start of the lesson, they will again play 'Kartentausch', but this time with cut outs of fruit (see page 2 of hand out below). On the bottom of slide 15 are numbers 1, 2 and 3. As the children play Kartentausch, they have to say 3 sentences as per the slide:
1 - the colour of the food e.g. die Banane ist gelb
2 - whether the food is healthy or unhealthy e.g. die Banane ist gesund
3 - a sentence about liking or disliking the food e.g. ich esse gern die Banane
Choose a card and model this activity with a child. After 3 sentences, swap the card, put your hand up and model with another child.
There is a twist however. One of the cards has a big X on it. This child finds a partner, waits for a question and simply says 'ich heiße Herr/Frau X'. When a child hears this reply, they should simply sit down quietly without telling anyone who Herr/Frau X is. The sitting children should just watch and listen to see who is really good at 'fruit' vocabulary (and they can feed back to you at the end). The game continues until only Herr/Frau X remains
Slide 16 - Wir haben Hunger song
Sing this song with actions to the children - there is a version at the bottom of this page. Point out that in German you 'have' hunger and thirst rather than 'be' hungry or thirsty. Sing the song in English so the children can see how simple it is - they usually laugh at 'sausage'. Give the children a few minutes to practise this song (with actions) on their tables and then run an inter-table competition. Alternatively, you could simply sing the song again as a class after a few minutes with the best singer earning a reward
