Fußball - Football

An ideal 'outdoors' lesson for the end of the school year in the sun.

I used this lesson in an MFL enrichment event with a local secondary school and it was written about on the MGN website:

Lesson Context

This is designed to be a stand-alone lesson. However as the language is not beginners level, I would suggest that the children should have had at least a few months of German before you teach them this lesson. Ideally teach it at the end of the Summer term so the children can enjoy the weather

Power point presentation

Hand outs which the children can take home for revision

Cones with numbers on them, set out in a large circle - off the football pitch

A football pitch

If possible - An additional adult to supervise the skills/game activity

Main Introduction

Slides 3 - 4 Football game and skills vocabulary

Sag mir nach (repeat after me) the vocabulary with the children. Explain that when you go outside, one half of the class will be playing football and the other half will work on skills*.

Tell the children that as soon as one randomly selected child can translate 10 of the words into German, they will go outside. Give the children 5+ minutes to to learn and test each other on this vocabulary on their tables.

*If you don't have an additional adult, simply do the activities in order. If you do, one adult does activities 1 and 2 and the other does activity 3. Swap the children after 20+ minutes.

Activity 1 - Maths in German with numbered cones

All the children stand inside the cones. Give the children a maths question such as drei plus drei. Eliminate the last few children to reach the 6 cone. Repeat with different sums but make sure the answer is always less than 10. Do some practise runs first.  Reward the 'last child standing'

Activity 2 - Follow commands around the circle

Children jog around the outside of the circle and follow your commands from slide 4. Every command you say 'du bist raus' to the last child/ a child who got it wrong. Eliminated children go inside the circle. The last girl/boy standing gets a reward. Repeat a few times
Optional - Do a similar activity but the children have to dribble a ball to a cone and back whilst following your commands such as 'langsam, schnell, Hand auf den Boden, springt' etc...

Activity 3 - Football Game

The children play against each other but are not allowed to speak English. Go over the vocabulary on slide 3 with them (bring a sheet outside) before they start. You are the referee and explain that if anyone speaks English they have to sit down for one minute.
