Lesson Context

This is the children's first lesson on 'hobbies', but much of the vocabulary crosses over from the 'sports' lessons, especially the verb 'spielen' (to play). Some of the vocabulary was also used in the 'activities' lessons and much of that vocabulary can also be used with 'spielen' such as 'Gitarre spielen' and 'am Computer spielen'. 'To stay' and 'to go' were touched upon in the activities lessons but today the full conjugations of those verbs will be learnt, as well as revisiting 'to run', to swim' and 'to do gymnastics'. The children will practise their new vocabulary by creating sentences with cards in 'make a sentence' and there are 2 writing activities, where the children will describe what others are doing and they will also write about what they like to do.

Resources

Power point presentation

Hand outs which the children can take home for revision

'Make a sentence' cards

Flashcards - 'Weekday and Family' - the activities vocabulary will be useful this lesson

Slide 2 - Main Introduction

Communicate LO and SC

Slide 3 - Starter activity - Das Kartenspiel - revision of Weekdays and Family

The children should know how to play the flashcard game by now so explain that they should be using the 'Lob' words on slide 3 and let them get on with it. The 'Activities' vocabulary will be relevant to this lesson

Slide 4 - To play - spielen

Recap this vocabulary from the sport lessons. Sag mir nach the vocabulary on the slide and ask questions such as how would you say:

*He plays football

*They play hockey

*We play rugby

Slide 6 - 'Play' words

Continue to ask questions, just as you did on the previous slide. Above the blue line is vocabulary from the previous sports lessons and below is additional vocabulary from the lessons with 'activities'. Explain that you 'play' all of these hobbies so any of these words could follow a conjugation' of 'spielen'. Point out the smiley face next to 'mit freunden' (with friends). You could simply place this after a conjugation of spielen e.g. 'Ich spiele mit Freunden'. It is a 'bonus phrase' though, because you could also place it after any full sentence to make it better. E.g. Ich spiele Fussball mit Freunden'. This goes for all sentences today, not just those with the verb 'spielen'.

Slides 6 and 7 - to go and to stay (gehen und bleiben)

The children touched on these verbs in terms of 'staying at home' and 'going to the cinema' in the 'Weekdays 2 with activities' lesson.

Slide 6 (to go) - Go through the slide and ask the children to translate sentences such as:

He goes

They go to the cinema

She goes to the cinema

*Point out that 'es geht' is another bonus this lesson. It literally means 'it goes' but it has several meanings such as:

*Not to bad - as a reply to 'how are you?'

*It works

*'Es geht nicht' means 'it is impossible' or 'it won't work'

*'Es geht um' can mean:

It is/has to do with ...

It is about ...

It is a matter of ...

It is a question of ...

Slide 7 (to stay)

Go through the slide and ask the children to translate sentences such as:

I stay

You stay at home

He stays at home

Slides 8, 9 and 10 - schwimmen, rennen and turnen

Sag mir nach the vocabulary on the slides and ask questions such as how would you say:

*He swims

*They run

*We do gymnastics

Point out the patterns in the endings and compare with 'spielen', 'bleiben' und 'gehen'. The children have all of the conjugations on their hand outs. You may also want to ask if some of the children can use the word gern e.g.

I like to do gymnastics - Ich turne gern

They like to swim - Sie turnen gern

Slide 11 - When? - Time of Day

Sag mir nach the vocabulary on this slide. Point out that when you combine the day with time of day, it is one word in German e.g. Am Montagmorgen, Am Dienstagnachmittag etc ...

Again, ask the children some translation questions, encouraging them to put the verb in the second position, such as:

Evenings I stay at home - Abends bleibe ich zu Hause

On Thursday morning I like to do gymnastics - Am Donnerstagmorgen turne ich gern

Slide 12 - Make a Sentence

Each pair has a set of 'make a sentence' cards. Within a time limit (5 minutes), the children have to make as many sentences as possible from the cards available. All of the statements have to make sense and the personal pronouns chosen have to match the correct conjugation. Tell the children that you will give bonus stickers/rewards if they use the connectives 'und', 'oder' and 'aber'. After the time limit is up, reward the pair who have completed the most correct sentences

Slide 13 - Was machen Sie? (What are they doing?)

This is a writing activity on page 2 (or the back) of the children's hand out. The children have to look at each picture and then make an appropriate sentence. The first 1 (of the footballers) would be 'Sie spielen Fussball.' Also correct would be 'Sie spielen Fussball mit Freunden' and 'Sie spielen gern Fussball'.

Was machst du gern? (What do you like to do?)

Using the personal pronoun 'ich', the children should write some sentences in the box about what hobbies they like to do. Again, encourage them to use the connectives 'und', 'oder' and 'aber'.

Assessment and Evidence

Observe and ask questions

Refer back to the learning objective and success criteria after the writing activities. Encourage some children to read out 'what they like to do'.

Check achievement of the success criteria when you are on slide 14 by questioning and rewarding randomly selected children (using lollipop sticks)
